Two boxing titans clash on April 4 as Derek Chisora vs Deontay Wilder is announced
The ‘Bronx Bomber’ Deontay Wilder and Derek ‘War’ Chisora will clash in the ring on April 4th in a battle that will mark their fiftieth professional fight.
With both boxers in their forties, this event comes near the end of their careers. Although Derek and Deontay have been cordial and friendly in press conferences this week, they have both made it clear that once the first bell rings, there will be no holding back.
Originally scheduled for December 2025, and previously cancelled on three other occasions due to contractual disagreements and other complications, the two athletes are finally set to entertain fans in an explosive heavyweight showdown.
Deontay Wilder has said his goal after this fight is to go head-to-head with the current heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, so the pressure is on him to defeat Derek Chisora, who is by no means a walk in the park.
Derek has made it clear that win, draw, or loss, this will be his last time in the ring, so he’ll be leaving it all there against the Bomb Squad leader.
In an interview with ESPN, Derek said, “I am not coming back. I will tell you why, because I don’t have any more training camps in me. That is God’s honest truth.” He has made it clear that, at this stage in his life, family commitments are more important and take centre stage.
On the other hand, Deontay is in a different mindsethe has to win this fight if he wants any chance of facing Oleksandr Usyk. “I need this fight. I need Derek more than he needs me… not just a win, but a devastating win. I need a knockout.”
If this fight goes in Derek Chisora’s favour, he can set sail to a well-earned retirement from boxing. In Deontay’s case, all hope of winning the WBO heavyweight belt will be taken from him, putting him in a difficult position career-wise.
The bout promises to be one to remember, with both fighters confronting the twilight of their careers: one lacing up the gloves for the last time in potentially glorious fashion, the other aiming to reclaim his chance at championship glory.
